Kings Cross Place Branding

2023

How can one capture the essence of a place of immense varied history?

Walks of Life was a response to a brief to create an identity for a place I felt a strong affinity toward. I chose Kings Cross in Sydney's inner city/east. Kings Cross is an area where you need to get below surface level to understand the true beauty of the place.

I find a lot of beauty in the grit, history and people of the area, and admire how it has remained resilient despite undergoing so much change in the past century. In my branding I wanted to acknowledge every aspect of its multifaceted existence; from the past to the present and future.

The name Walks of Life came from the residents and stories within the streets of the area. The brand’s fonts and colours were chosen carefully to reflect this. The typefaces, Autopia Bold, Terminal Grotesque and Neue Machina Inktrap, respectively embodied the history, the nightlife and the current modernity of the area.

Colours were inspired by elements from the colour of the tiles at Kings Cross station, to the flamboyancy of the area’s nightlife, and the beauty of the greenery and sky as you walk down the tree-lined streets.
