What does fabric do to our body?

The AIDS Memorial Quilts, made by loved ones of those who lost their lives to HIV, are a tangible expression of mourning, as well as a site of remembrance and a way of seeing "the humanity behind the statistics".

Looking through the Powerhouse online collection, I was drawn to the AIDS Memorial Quilts and the stories they told, as well as the textile and design work of David McDiarmid which expanded my understanding of the art scene at the time.

Soft Substances explores the power of textiles as objects that carry memory, history and resistance.
